UK Hotel Review : The Inn at Penallt, Wales

After spending most of Christmas with the flu bug that seemed to be going around, I was really looking forward to a few days off over New Years Eve. Visiting some friends in Wales, we looked for somewhere to stay. The following criteria had to be met: 1) Within half an hour of where my friends live (nr. Monmouth), 2) Dog friendly accommodation 3) Friendly people and good accommodation. The Inn at Penallt (formerly called ‘The Bush’ apparently according to the locals) fitted the bill plus there was a New Year’s Eve party (optional fancy dress) on!! What more could you want?!

Location:
Located in Wales, approx. 30 mins from the Severn Bridge crossing in a village called Penallt.  In the middle of the Wye Valley area and with beautuful views across the countryside, the Inn is a great place to stay if you like walking, have dogs, or just like to get away from it all.

Accommodation:
There are four rooms available – two are dog friendly.  I stayed in one of the dog friendly rooms (extra £10 charge for deep cleaning afterwards).  They are newly refurbished and nicely done.  A bit on the small side but adequate for myself and husband plus two dogs (spaniel and labrador).  The dog friendly rooms are located next to the pub rather than in the main building which works well as it means you can let the dogs out directly into the large rear garden belonging to the pub.  Just along the road nearby there is access to many country walks and fields that the dogs can run about in.  My dogs loved it!  All the usual facilities in the rooms including TV, Ensuite, Tea making facilities plus some lovely local shortbread biscuits which were very nice!

What makes it special:
From the first point of contact with Andy the landlord at the pub I was very impressed with his helpfulness and friendliness.  He was as accommodating as he could be with regards to the dogs and any special requests.  The Inn is a new venture by the new landlord and family and seems to have been embraced by the locals and visitors alike.  It has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, the food is great and the NYE party was very lively and great fun with lots of people entering into the spirit of the Fancy Dress.

I would definately recommend a visit to the Inn at Penallt and would not hesitate to stay there again when visiting friends in Wales.  I had a lovely time there in the depths of Winter over New Year so I can imagine it is an even greater place to stay during the Summer.  n.b. It’s closed now until the 20th January for further re-furbishment and maintenance.
